You have all done an excellent job with the first assignment. The point is to use your English comprehension skills to navigate the web. This week you will be watching a very short video on the world's English MANIA. It is from a site that I really like called TED.COM, and I often watch videos on this site instead of watching TV!
Just click on the link, and then look at the bottom left side of your screen to turn on the subtitles in English. You can try to watch without subtitles the first time, but it is a GREAT idea to practice listening with subtitles in English so that you train your brain to understand the words being spoken.
After watching the video, explore the site and choose another video that you think will be interesting. Don't forget to turn on the subtitles!
I can't wait to hear what you think about the one I have chosen, and also the ones you choose to watch afterward!
Here is the link:
Jay Walker on the World's English Mania
Enjoy!

Hi teacher…the second assignement was very fun!
I can quite understand without subtitles, I think Jay Walker has covered a very original theme. I’m very impressed with the pictures and video of Chinese students on the English language ... it is absolutely right that everyone should know a language to communicate all over the world and solve global problems .. but I found the songs a bit exaggerated!
After this, I chose a video about science:
Christopher deCharms looks inside the brain
Christopher deCharms talk a little faster than Jay Walker, I think that it is impossible to understand something without subtitles!
Anyway in this interesting journey into the human brain, he says that you will be able to look inside your brain and program control the brain areas. The scientists see this areas using MRI when the subject play the action, with a colored image of brain!
At the end, he says also that in the future we will control our emotion, for example looking at the activation in the brain that producing the pain, and this is very important for the chronic pain patients.

Hello, I'm Arianna..
I'v read what Anna wrote and the article she mentioned seemed so interesting that I was forced to take a look..That's amazing and fascinating, isn't it, the possibility to control our senses controlling our brain- this matter has been so much dealt in sci-fi stuffs I didn't think it to be possible.. The point is: is all of this really true or it's just a bluff? I do not know
I had no problems understanding it without subtitles, maybe because I already knew what it was all about. As it concerns the video you chose for us, I read a book about chinese culture and history, so it was no surprise they are so obsessed by learning english..or whatever.
Goodbye
p.s.teacher I was wondering, if I signed up an account and entered my comments with it, could you correct my mistakes..?If it's no big deal for you,of course..
Dear Teacher,
I'm Monica, yesterday ( Wednesday, finally) I graduated and I'm very happy. Now I'm studing for the Pet exam that will be on Saturday all the day!! (from 9:00am to 12:00 for Reading and Writing and Listenin, then at 16:00 will start the oral part). I hope also this exam will be fine. I'll tell you as soon as possible!!!
See you soon,
Monica.
Arianna,
Your English is quite good, actually; just a couple of things to correct:
I'v read = I've read
this matter = this subject
so much dealt in sci-fi stuffs = dealt with so often in sci-fi stuff
I didn't think it to be possible = I didn't think it was possible
As it concerns the video = Concerning the video
Dear Teacher,
This time I managed to see the whole video ...
It is true! the mania of learning English has spread all over the world! I too have this mania of English ... hihihi!!!!
Good week end...

Don't forget to choose ANOTHER video to watch after the English Mania one!
hi teacher!i'm Fabio!
the jay walker's video was been very interesting!i understood well enough without the subtitles too, but in some (fews) point i didn't understand clearly! anyway, i found the video and the discussion inside it, that show the meanings why a lot of people arond the world, wants to learn english lenguage!if the people knows the english, can go around the world and comunicate with other people without problems, everywhere, olso with people of a culture totally different of themself!this is wonderfull!!
the other video i watched was been " Yann arthus-bertrand captures fragile earth in wide angle"! i watched it olso because i am very sensible to environment problems! in fact in this video, Yann shows, with aerial photograph, interviews to people around the world, and the realization of a movie (called "home"),the human impact on the environment! the aerial photograph belongs to a series called "the heart from above" , that rappresents the earth and the human living on it, from another point of view! it is a very interesting documentary!

I would like to improve my listening's ability. Can I do it?
I have another question. I can use TRY wiht infinitive but olso with -ing: How do I have to choose the corret form?
Thans.

Hi teacher, I'm Rossella.
I'm sorry for delay. The Jay Walker's video is very easy and funny because him speaks slowly, I understand almost all whithout subtitles. The other videos are very catastrophe, I must use the subtitles because I not understand without.
Bye Rossella
hi teacher,
i saw the video about Nora York and her song... well, it 's very nice but i wasn't very amazed like Jay Walker...so i "wandered" around TED without interest but, suddenly, my eyes were attracted by a wonderful image....the video about Yann Arthus Bertrand, maybe because he get a job which i always wish to do ...he captures fragile earth in wide- angle... i think that, in my life, i have ever seen some photos more beautiful and significant!!!
he did his pictures travelling around the world and in this way he showed us how we are destroing our planet and its wonders. the photos try to explain the compromise position of the human society towards the earth and Nature Mother.if we change the world's natural schedule, we can write the our death... we depend by sea, forest, desert, ocean, ices... so we must have respect for the earth!
I understood the meaning about video but i had more probleams about the meaning of several words... but i said that the pictures helped me!!!i wanted to write more and more about this video... but it isn't impossible but i recommend it!!!
bye

Good afternoon teacher!
I made this one at last, because i just didn't read it! So..the video about China and its "english mania" was very interesting, in my opinion: how we Italian need to take inspiration by they people!?
And then..I've watched an Alison Jackson's video, in which she explains how media can manipulate celebrities lives, and in this way make people believe that they know who Princess Dianna really is (or was), or something like that..that is quite true, I think.
Ok, hope to do the exam on 26!
See you soon.

Hi prof
is it possible to know next exam date?
Thank you so much

Hi prof
I understood jay walker's video without subtitles because he speaks slowly. I think is very important learn english because it is the world language. Even very poor countries are learning english to compete with the world, and so get angry because I think that italian people, from this point of view, are backwards compared to most other countries.
I like this sentence: English represents a future where the worls has a common language to solve its common problems.

Than I've listened a Ann Cooper video about school lunch and children nutrition. It's very interesting, she says that it's very important to teach children the relationship between a healty planet, healthy food and healthy kids. Schools should teach how and what to eat rightly; kids can't eat pesticides, herbicides, antibiotics and hormones, because they getting sick, just think that 70% of all antibiotics consumed in America is consumed in animal husbandry, US agriculture uses 1,2 billion pounds of pesticides every year.
Unhealthy eating can lead to insulin dependence, blindness, premature death. The CDC says that 40-45% of all school-aged children could be insulin-dependent within decade.
Big companies spend 20 billion dollars a years for not nutritional foods to kids, as Coca Cola, Mc Donalds, Burger King, etc. It's important that school teachs children the correct way of eat and, even more important, getting fresh food into schools, no high-fructose corn syrup, no trans fat, no processed foods. Kids must understand that their foods choises make a big difference in their life.
I think this is a very important topic because the proper growth of a child depends for most on their diet and, if the school (that is tha State) is the first example, we are at a good starting point.

PS I hope everything is correctly written
Hi teacher, I'm Veronica Striano matr. no. N05/0064. I'm going to do the exam on the 23rd of July.
This is my last assignment because I watched the video when you published it but I forgot to leave my comment! Anyway I was able to understand everything Jay Walker said without the subtitles. As regards the content of the video I think that learning a language
must be a pleasure more than an obligation but I don't live in China and maybe I don't understand the real importance of speaking English to better my life.
I watched another video of Arthur Benjamin who suggests to improve the study of statistics and probability in addition to calculus which is not very used in the daily life. Even if I don't know much about statistics, I think that it could change our way of studying mathematics and maybe it could have important results in our daily lives!!
Bye teacher!! See you at the university..

Hi teacher ,i saw the video of Richard St.john by title " Success is continous jouney" I like his opinion about success and happy.
He interviewed 500 people defined successfullso wote some book and now he talk about his opinion.
He reminds us that success is not a one-way street.Following linearly passion, work, focus, push ideas, improve, serve, persist the man can have a failure when stop trying .
He uses story of his business, he can buy all he wants but now is depressed and haven't a passion: with the money can buy the happiness!
so he say that sucess is a constant journey represent by a circle with all the element!

I liked the video of j. Wolker because it is characterized by beautiful images and very clear and interesting words. We can divide the video into 2 parts:
First part that is some major manias as: Beatles manias, sports manias and religious manias. This is 3 mania that can be understood in a positive and negative. Positive, as they represent the means for the fulfillment of the body (sport manias) and of (religious and beatles manias ), negative, when it becomes an obsession.
The part 2 is characterized by the spread of English in many countries around the world especially in China. The words of J. Wolker who argue that English is now the world language 2, is correct. I think it is right that all people have the world as a second language English because the globalization language improve, business and interpersonal skills. May I conclude by saying that English is positive if manias is a manias contained without result obsession.

Hi teacher,
The Jay Walker’s video is very ingenious.
Through his interesting words and beautiful images, highlights the importance of the English language in the world, in particular in Latin America, in India ,in Southeast Asia and most of all in China.
As repeat Jay Walker the English is the opportunity for a better life, a job, etc.
These people who study English well are to be envied, because the Italy underestimates this language which has become our daily bread.
The demand for Jay Walker “so is english manias good or bad? I say that the english manias is good, because leads us to globalization.
Anna D’Auria

Hi teacher, I'm Olga Borsellini, I've forgot to write my name in my last comment in may. I wrote a summary on lipids, specially on trans fat acids.
Instead now I'm writing an article on diets for special people: diabetics.
Diabetic diets are not related to fad weight-loss diets. Diet is a general word that refers to your eating habits. So Diabetic diet is only a particular diet.
The diabetic person is obliged to control his / her eating habits, The scope of this diet is to maintain blood sugar levels at a healthy level.
There is no hard and fast rules that certain food a diabetic can eat or cannot eat. Eat a little of everything in moderate amounts is the best way.
The diabetic diets were created to help diabetics feed their bodies in a very controlled, regular way.
For example, it is authorized to have one fruit and one carbohydrate for your morning snack, you know that you can choose one item from the list of fruits and the list of carbohydrates.
You may choose an apple and a small handful of pretzels today and some strawberries and an English muffin tomorrow, but you will always choose one and only one serving of fruit and one of carbohydrates at the morning snack, if that is what your dietitian has recommended.
In this way, diabetic diet is not really restricted.
This article is well done, because I think that diabete is a pathology that is increasing particularly in Italy because of the bad eating habits imported from america.
Infact old people in Italy as my grandmother don't know what is a Mc Donald and she prefere to eat legumes and vegetable!
Hi teacher,
I watched the video and found it very interesting.
This short video talking about the English Mania in the world.
Starting from the most popular manias in the world (like religion, sport, beatles ecc.) Jay Walker explain why Billion of people (in several countries) are trying to learn English. In this regard he show how the Chinese population learning English, in fact he says that China would be come the most largest English speaking country.
He introduce other universal languages:
Mathematics - universal language of science
Music - universal language of emotions
Finally, he conclude the shortly talk saying that English is becoming universal language for problem solving and for believing in a world without problems like hungry or wars.
“..English represent hope for better future..”
Bye,
Rosa Nappo 084/051.
